ExactHire is in its second year of monthly Monday Fundays. Headed up by our company’s Fun Committee, the events follow our monthly Pow-Wow (all hands company meeting) and are eagerly anticipated. However there are some months where–for whatever reason–participation is low.
That was the case this March when vacations, family priorities, and unexpected conflicts resulted in a smaller group of competitors. This was fine for our team. MondayFundays are never required, and our leadership encourages employees to prioritize work and family life equally.
This month’s competition was scheduled to be a leprechaun hunt. The objective of the game was to collect as many points as possible by shooting various targets. However this plan was changed on the day of the competition because someone’s son secretly removed the Nerf shooter from someone’s car.
So someone had to think on his feet and devise a new game. The result was a game with the same objective, but using a Bozo’s Circus Grand Prize Game approach.
A Low Scoring Affair
I got the competition off to a blazing start with a goose egg. Our co-owner Harlan was the first to score with a 5 point bucket. Jess took note and used a conservative strategy of focusing on the 5 point target exclusively. Nancy took a similar approach and ended up in the lead. And I really can’t remember what Randi did, but I think she joined me in the goose egg nest. That left our co-owner Jeff….
You Got Mail
Jeff takes MondayFundays seriously. He’s right up there with Allen on the total wins leaderboard. And with Allen gone, Jeff could see victory within his grasp. As I recall, Jeff took a few practice dribbles before taking his first shot (similar to a basketball player before a free throw)–a highly unorthodoxed move, classic Jeff.
But just as he was getting into his throwing motion, we had a surprise visitor. Our mail lady–whose name shall remain anonymous–entered the room. Jeff was visibly flustered. Why? One can only speculate. Perhaps he was waiting on some important mail, or maybe he was embarrassed to be caught having fun in the office. Whatever the reason, it was clear that Jeff was rattled.
His first shot missed the mark by far. His second and third shots rimmed out. His fourth shot scored 5. But his last shot bounced out.
Nancy claimed the March 2017 MondayFunday champion title and the golden vase!
It would have been easy to cancel this month’s Funday. Only half our team was there. Our Pow-wow ran a little long. Our Nerf shooters were missing.
But our team knows that consistency is important in everything we do, that includes planning time to relax and have fun together. So we pulled it together and had another enjoyable day in the office. We even gave our mail carrier a good laugh!
Monday Funday is one way in which ExactHire seeks to build and grow a fun work culture. Each month–on a Monday of course–we recognize the work anniversaries and birthdays of our team. We also participate in creative competitions that sometimes turn fierce.
We share recaps of these events on our blog in an effort to spread the word that Monday can be a fun day. But, we also want to know how you have FUN at your workplace. So, tweet your ideas to @goExactHire and include the #mondayfunday hashtag.
